How I work

Judgment, applied inside the organization, alongside the people accountable for the outcome.

I am engaged by the people accountable for an organization through change: chief executives, chief human resources officers, transformation leads, and increasingly the operating partners of private equity firms.

The situations

They are familiar. A restructuring that has to hold once it is announced. A transformation program where the plan is sound and the organization is not moving. A leadership transition: a new chief executive, a new team, a founder stepping back. The integration after a deal, when two ways of working meet and neither has been chosen.

In each, the question underneath is the same. What actually drove results before the change, which of those conditions survived it, and what has to be rebuilt.

In almost every case, the leaders under scrutiny are not underperforming. They are operating in conditions that changed without anyone naming the change.

The work

I work directly with the accountable executive and their team. I read the organization as it actually is, not as the plan describes it. I say what I see, including the dynamic everyone is working around. Then I help shape the architecture for what comes next and stay through the period where it has to hold.

Every piece of work produces a concrete output. A read of the organization. A named set of decisions. A sequenced plan the executive can defend.

What this is not

This is not development work and it is not training. It is advisory. Thirty years of judgment, applied inside the organization, alongside the people accountable for the outcome.

This is not organization design. I am not building the operating model or running the restructuring or transformation. I am engaged on the leaders who remain once the structure has changed. and on what the new environment actually requires of them.

How it starts

It starts with a conversation.

You describe what changed or is changing and who is affected. I’ll tell you whether this is work I should be doing, and what it would take.

Email me with the situation and I will reply directly.
